Set in a world inspired by music, DISHARMONY takes you through an adventure filled with smiles, tears, and maybe a few scares along the way. Expect to see various towns and cities, quirky characters, mind-bending puzzles, and plenty of cats.

DISHARMONY allows the player to explore the dreams of some of the game's characters. Can you help them overcome their nightmares...? Going through these optional sequences will teach you more about the characters and their personalities, as well as allow you to uncover the deeper secrets hidden in the game's world.

The game's battle system is a mix of classic turn-based combat borrowed from old JRPGs and gameplay typically found in rhythm games. Defeat your enemies with the power of music!

DISHARMONY may be a fairly serious game at times, but it also has a lot of goofy and lighthearted humour. Did someone say "puns"...?

No...?

Oh.

Well, there's loads of them.

The game features an aesthetic inspired by classic games from the 80s/90s, as well as segments featuring hand-drawn art, frame-by-frame animation, and claymation. There are loads of secrets and easter eggs to find, as well as references to various bands and musical artists. The game also features an original soundtrack!

The game's world features elements of both fantasy and science fiction.

WARNING:

I have waited for a while to play it. Had to wrap up some titles with higher priority in my list but finally managed to get to Disharmony. I was not disapointed by the gameplay at all. It really is a rhytm game trapped in a jRPG. I love the idea really. However, I majorly suck at rhytm games, at least that is what I managed to find out. I beat the first monster, then immediately died to the second one. I managed to beat it after the respawn but immediately died to the boss. Then proceeded to bash my head at the boss for a while until I gave up and pick the "Accessibility" option. After I chose it, I found out that I was in the mere beginning of the boss. I lost about 4000 HP until I managed to beat the boss. Safe to say, it's not the game for me. I am glad I gave it a chance though. And glad I supported you, author. Props on finishing the game.

On another note, controller support completely did not work for me. I tried my DualSense and found out it just does not register inputs. However, when I tried to use Joy2Key for DualSense to imitate a keyboard, it did do that but the game also kept switching between controller and keyboard inputs as it seems that it somehow registers that there is a controller. When I tried my 8-bitdo SN30 Pro 2 I found out that it mostly works but the Cancel/Decline option does not. So I ended up playing with keyboard.

Hey, thank you very much. Not just for playing the game, but for taking your time to write a little bit about your experience.

Yes, something that became evident very early in playtesting was that the game is quite difficult, at least to players who are inexperienced with rhythm games. For the most part, I'm actually fine with that-- Even if I were to rebalance the game from scratch, I would probably stick with the decision to only have one difficulty option-- but I feel like I could have given players a better opportunity to get used to the controls and such before tossing them headfirst into some fairly tough fights.

Thanks a million for the support, and for sharing your thoughts.

Oh, and as for the controller support, I can't give you an easy answer as to why it didn't work. Personally, I've only tried using an XBOX controller and a few Nintendo Switch controllers (one first party, the other from Hori). Others have had mixed results using PlayStation controllers, it seems like it just sort of works for some people on some machines, but not for others. No idea why. It might be a GameMaker thing, it might be related to the input library I'm using, it might have to do with drivers. No clue.

Yes, I completely back the decision for one difficulty option. I feel that games should not be "for everyone" so it is not a bad thing if a game is not for me.

(1 edit)

I'm not sure if there's a better place to put this, but in the current version 1.2 itch release it shows a continue option in the menu at first launch that will softlock the game, needing a force close to resolve. Otherwise I'm looking forward to checking this out, your final devlog was awesome, I only wish I heard about this game sooner.

I don't mind you posting about it here at all! The most formal way to do it would probably be to send an email, but the way I see it, as long as I get the message, it doesn't matter much where it's sent.
The dreaded "continue softlock" is something that seemingly haunts the game at random, for some versions it's there, and for some it isn't :P The next patch should have a pretty-much permanent fix though. Thanks for notifying me about it, and for the kind words!

Hi again, for email is bootcatstudio at g mail still the best contact? I found a few more things if it would be helpful.

That's the one! You're welcome to send anything related to the game, issues or otherwise.

Hey, really cool game! BTW I'm working on a beat mapper app for music-based games. It's called MBOY Editor (https://vfpe.itch.io/mboy-editor) Do you want to try it for your game? Vic
